About Northern List

Classifieds matter more here than most places. When the nearest store is a plane ride away, or the truck you need has to start at forty below, buying used from someone down the road is how things get done. People sell sleds before breakup, firewood before termination dust, and boats every spring. Dry cabins turn over every fall.

The sites Alaskans have been using for that haven’t kept up. They’re slow, cluttered and hard to search, the categories don’t fit how people here actually buy and sell, and the biggest complaint of all: once you post something, it’s surprisingly hard to change it or take it down. Northern List is our answer to that.

Every listing belongs to an account, and the person who posted it can edit it, mark it sold, renew it or delete it at any time, from My listings or straight from the listing page. No emailing anyone, no waiting for it to fall off on its own. The help page walks through each step.

Listings run 30 days and renew for free, so search stays full of things that are actually still for sale.

Posting is free in every category, from a $20 pair of XtraTufs to a house in Homer. A free account can have 15 listings up at once, which is plenty for almost everyone. Categories are built for Alaska: snowmachines and aircraft get their own sections, rentals can say whether they have running water, and sellers can say whether they’ll send things out to the Bush.

Northern List is new, and a classifieds site is only as good as the people on it. So the first 1,000 people to verify their email are founding members: they get a Founding member badge, and their first listing in most categories is featured free for 7 days. How founding membership works.

Anyone can also become a verified seller by passing a photo ID and selfie check run by Stripe. It costs $2.99 once, because each check costs us money to run, and it’s free on a Business account. We never see or keep the ID itself, only whether it passed. Get verified.

Verified sellers can invite people they know with a personal link. When someone they invite verifies their email and keeps a listing up for 3 days, they each get a free bump. Rewards are bumps, never cash. The invite rules.

Servers, email, and dealing with spam and scams cost money. We cover them with things people choose to buy, not with your data:

• Bumps and featured listings. A seller can pay $2.99 to move a listing back to the top, or $9.99 to feature it for a week. Paid placements are always labelled.
• Business accounts at $39 a month, for dealers, landlords and shops that post a lot.
• Local ads. A few ad spaces sold directly to Alaska businesses, always marked Sponsored. No ad networks, no tracking you around the internet. Interested? Here’s how to advertise.

• We don’t sell, rent or trade your personal information to anyone.
• We don’t show your email address to other users. Buyers reach you through on-site messages.
• We don’t use advertising cookies or third-party trackers.
• We don’t charge to post, and we don’t hide your listing to push you into paying.
