Agreeing to these terms

By using Northern List you agree to these terms, our privacy policy and our prohibited items rules. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.

Your account

  • You need an account to post listings, send messages or buy promotions. You must be at least 18 to have one.
  • Give us a real email address you check, and keep your details accurate.
  • One person per account. A business can have one account that its staff share, as long as someone is responsible for it.
  • Keep your password to yourself. You’re responsible for what happens on your account. If you think someone else has gotten in, reset your password and tell us.
  • If we’ve banned you, don’t open a new account.

Your listings and content

  • You’re responsible for what you post. Listings must be accurate, for something you actually have and have the right to sell or rent, and legal in Alaska and under federal law. They must follow our prohibited items rules and any rules shown for the category you post in.
  • One item, or one closely related set of items, per listing. Don’t post the same thing more than once, and post it in the category that fits.
  • You keep ownership of your photos and text. By posting them, you give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, copy, resize, display and distribute them on Northern List and in our emails, for as long as they’re on the site plus a reasonable time to clear them from backups. You promise you have the right to give us that license, for example because you took the photos yourself.
  • Listings run 30 days and then expire unless you renew them. You can edit, mark sold, renew or delete your listings at any time.
  • Free accounts can have up to 15 active listings at once. Business accounts have no limit.

Messages

On-site messages are for talking about a listing. Don’t use them to spam, harass, advertise something else or collect people’s contact details for other purposes. We don’t read messages as a matter of routine, but we may review them when someone reports a conversation or a listing, or when the law requires it.

Our role in your deals

Northern List is a venue: a place where people find each other. We aren’t a party to any sale, rental, job or other deal made through the site. We don’t own, inspect or hold the items listed, we don’t verify that users are who they say they are, and we don’t guarantee the quality, safety, legality or accuracy of any listing, or that a buyer or seller will follow through.

Any deal is between the buyer and the seller, and so is any dispute about it. We may help where we can, for example by removing a scam listing or banning an account, but we aren’t obligated to. Please read our safety guide before you meet anyone or send money.

Things you can't do

When you use Northern List, please don’t:

  • Scrape, copy or harvest listings or user information with bots or scripts, or re-post our listings elsewhere without permission.
  • Use the site to send spam, run scams, or collect people’s contact details.
  • Try to get around a removal, a ban, the listing limit or our paid features, for example with extra accounts.
  • Interfere with the site, probe it for security weaknesses without permission, or overload it.
  • Pretend to be someone else, or to represent a business you don’t.

Found a security problem? Please tell us at [email protected] instead of testing it on real users.

Removal, suspension and closing accounts

We can remove any listing or content, and limit, suspend or close any account, if we believe it breaks these terms or the law, puts people at risk, or harms the site. We usually tell you why by email. If you think we’ve made a mistake, reply and we’ll take another look.

You can stop using Northern List and delete your account at any time from Settings. Cancel any Business plan first. Sections of these terms that by their nature should outlast your account, such as our role, disclaimers, limits on liability and governing law, still apply after it’s closed.

Our name and site

The Northern List name, logo and site design belong to us. Don’t use them in a way that suggests we endorse you or your business. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.

Disclaimers

Northern List is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t promise the site will always be available, error-free or secure, or that listings will sell.

Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows, Northern List and the people who run it won’t be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or losses from deals between users, even if we were told they were possible.

Our total liability for any claim about the site or these terms is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $100. Some places don’t allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

Your responsibility to us

If someone makes a claim against us because of your listings, your messages, your deals with other users, or your breaking these terms or the law, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, including legal fees.

Alaska law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alaska, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If there’s a dispute, please email us first; most problems get sorted out that way. If we can’t settle it within 60 days, either of us may bring it in the state or federal courts located in Anchorage, Alaska, and we both agree to those courts’ jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring a claim in small claims court if it qualifies.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site changes. The date at the top shows the last change. If a change is significant, we’ll tell account holders by email or with a notice on the site before it takes effect. Using the site after that means you accept the new terms.
